What is a floating exchange rate?
A floating exchange rate is determined through open trading on the foreign exchange market. A currency that uses a floating exchange rate is known as a floating currency. While these currencies are allowed to "float" on the FOREX market, a central bank will often intervene to prevent destabilization of a currency.
How Are Currencies Traded?
Currencies are traded against each other. Each pair of currencies constitutes an individual currency product and is traditionally noted XXX/YYY, where XXX and YYY represent the three-letter currency codes. For example, EUR/USD (Euro versus the US Dollar) may be bought or sold on the FOREX market.
